SJF Network Account Retention for Alumni

St. John Fisher University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) has recently updated its IT standards, specifically in relation to alumni and graduated students’ network accounts. These changes are set to take effect beginning May 1, 2024.

WHAT IS CHANGING AS PART OF THE IT STANDARDS UPDATE?

Network Account Deletion:
Beginning May 1, 2024, SJF network accounts for alumni and graduated students will be automatically deleted one year after their graduation date. This measure has been implemented to enhance security and optimize our IT resources. Existing alumni (May 2023 and earlier graduates) will retain their SJF network accounts until August 1, 2024.

This will affect services such as:

  • Email
  • Google Applications (including Google Drive)
  • Microsoft 365 and Office Products

WHY?

Stale Accounts: Between 4 and 6 months after graduation, usage of SJF network accounts drops dramatically.
Enhancing Security: By promptly deactivating network accounts, we ensure that sensitive information remains secure. It also reduces the risk of unauthorized access to SJF systems.
Resource Optimization: Managing inactive network accounts consumes valuable resources. Deleting accounts allows us to allocate these limited resources more efficiently.

WHAT ACTION DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE?

  1. If you have utilized any services that reference your SJF network account (such as Netflix or Amazon Prime), please ensure that these services are directed to a personal email address. This will help ensure seamless continuity in accessing vital information and services beyond your graduation.
  2. Prior to the one year expiration deadline, ensure that any data you wish to retain has been downloaded or transferred.
  3. Inform any necessary contacts to begin using your personal email address (that includes your alma mater! Sign up to receive regular Fisher updates and be sure to complete the Alumni Update form to share your latest news!)
  4. If you have redirected your SJF network account email to a personal email, please update your settings to ensure continuous service in your communications.

If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to contact the OIT Service Desk at (585) 385-8016, or via email at oitservicedesk@sjf.edu.
